In this blog, I'll be changing direction a little bit with my product photography, and showing how I went about creating this image!

My goal in Product Photography

Most of the time when people think of product photography, they think of a white background with boring lighting. I would like to change that. For this product photo, I knew improvements could be made to a boring white background.

Building the Studio Photography set

This set was harder to build than my previous projects, but it was worth trying something new. Instead of cutting every shape out with a hand saw and painting the wood, I decided to try skipping the paint altogether. The texture of the shelf is made of seamless paper. Because the background was captured entirely in camera, it wound up looking way better than using photoshop to fill in the gaps.

The Mood

Using a monochromatic colour palette, it can be easy to lose focus on the product or lose visual interest in the photo. I was able to solve both of these problems with lighting.

To make this picture more interesting, I used a palm tree leaf to cast a speckled shadow across the set. This was critical in making the photo feel more mysterious, and fit in with the natural theme of Tata Harper Products. The positions of the camera, background, lighting and product all help this product photography feel more interesting and engaging.

I hope you learned a little bit about my process in this blog! More product photography will be on the way shortly!
